Hi! I’m Erin!

I’m a wedding and editorial photographer in Newport, RI with a heart of wanderlust and a passport at-the-ready.  I live in a sweet little bungalow with my husband Nic, and any number of foster pups!

After getting my BS in Marine Biology at URI, I found myself (and true love) in San Diego. In 2006 Nic and I moved back to Little Rhody. New England never left our hearts, we missed our families and the seasons.

My background as a wedding planner, blog and wedding magazine editor, and stylist gives me a unique outlook on wedding photography and come into play at every time I shoot.  I planned my own wedding only a few years back (along with 40 others in the same year), so I know how much time goes into every inch of your day. Completely inspired by fine art and editorial styles of photography, I began assisting many local photographers and completed the CE Program at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Developing my eye as an editor, staff photographer, blogger and stylist at local wedding magazines Southern New England Weddings and Bliss Celebrations Guide , I launched my business in 2011.

That unique background trained my eye to capture detail-oriented, editorial style imagery.  My fly-on-the-wall mindset is to let the day unravel as it may, never pausing you during important formalities but capturing your raw emotion artfully and unobtrusively.

I shoot primarily with natural light.  You’ll find my style is soft and sun-kissed.  Ever inspired by the timelessness of film, you can be assured your photos will never feel dated or trendy, but classically fresh.  I may even shoot a few rolls at your wedding if time allows!

WHAT MAKES YOUR WORK DIFFERENT?

With a unique background in wedding planning and as a magazine editor, I see not only your moments but details and design in order to tell your complete story. I approach things from a photojournalistic perspective but will highlight your details alongside candid imagery so that everything feels the way you remember. The breeze blowing your veil, the mini lobster rolls, and the laughing ring bearer are captured alongside your invitation photographed with bits of flowers, and your shoes placed elegantly next to your bouquet.

DO YOU RETOUCH YOUR IMAGES?

No, I do not retouch. I believe in documenting real, organic, authentic imagery. I don’t retouch skin, breeze blown hair, laugh lines or ever make you a different size than you are. When you look back on them I want you to feel the way you felt in that moment, not an altered, plastic version of it. I believe all humans are beautiful in their own skin, and I refer only the best hair and makeup artists in the area to give you a look that accentuates your natural beauty.

What's the deal with Black and White photos?

I deliver a good mix of color and black and white conversions. I am drawn to black and white for emotional moments, cluttered scenes, and special connections. Anything I deliver in color can be converted to Black and White upon request. Black and White edits can NOT be changed to color for any reason.

WHAT IS YOUR STYLE?

I’m a natural light wedding photographer with focus on editorial imagery and fine art processing. I’m very inspired by the timelessness of film, and aim to edit my images as close to film tones as possible. I shoot digital 99% of the time, but may shoot a roll or two of film if time allows.

WHY GET AN ALBUM?

If the internet died tomorrow, would you still have pictures? If your computer crashed, if Facebook got deleted, if Instagram went under, would you have your precious memories? You’ve seen your grandparents' wedding photos, likely they weren’t on a CD or a tablet. You held them in your hands or looked at them in a bound book. Creating an heirloom to have and to hold (and maybe parent books) is the best way to view memories.

WILL WE HAVE THE PRINT RELEASE?

Yes! Your contract allows for you to print your wedding and engagement photos. Though you don’t have to order them through me, I highly suggest ordering anything to frame or gift so you can be sure they are of the best quality. You can also share your images online with photo credit, use them to make gifts for folks, or make thank yous, holiday cards, or save the dates.

HOW MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS DO WE NEED?

It totally depends on your unique situation and style of wedding. Many weddings I approach completely solo and others I really need an assistant to join me.

WHAT IS YOUR STARTING RATE?

Intimate weddings and elopements are priced upon request and based on timeframe and size.

Full wedding coverage starts at $12,000.

Destination events are all custom quoted.

WHY DOES EVERYONE LOOK RELAXED?

Two things:

95% of my clients choose to do an engagement session which I think is the best way for us to get to know each other better and to make you comfortable infront of the camera. Doing so allows me to blend into the background even more on your wedding day!

And Relationship building. I only take less than 15 weddings per year so that I can devote my time, energy, and quality of service to my clients. I LOVE hearing about where you got your dress, the flowers you decided on, the appetizers, the special family members and more. Meeting for coffee or cocktails over the planning process when you are in town, and working together to help advise you on your dream team of vendors is something I LOVE to do!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF WEDDING?

As a natural light photographer, couples who are open to shooting all of their portraiture outdoors, or with tones of window light, and who allow me to capture their sweet details while the sun shines are my favorite. My light and airy style works best in daylight, so tented weddings, those with lots of bright spaces, and anything set in a private home or intimate setting are my favorites. If food is a focus for you, we will be besties as my other passion is shooting food (see erinmcginnphotography.com).
